Hand Hooked Rugs

Our Hand Hooked rugs are made of 100% Virgin Wool. They were designed by Jane McGowen, a New England Artisan, who is a Third-Generation Rug Hooker. Jane’s grandmother, Pearl McGowan, was a crafter, author and teacher. She began hooking rugs as a child, and in no time was designing and selling her own patterns. By her late 30s her first book was published. In the 1950s she had started the McGowen Teachers’ Workshop, a place for teachers of the craft to share ideas and perpetuate the craft. Jane joined her grandmother in this venture to work and travel together. The business was eventually sold to Sturbridge Village, which was a very hard decision, but Pearl was getting older, and Jane was starting her own family. However, after Jane’s children were grown, she and Pearl (89 years old at the time) started the Jane McGowan Flynn business. The entire focus of this business was to keep the McGowen Teachers’ Workshops alive. The business was very successful for many years, until Jane was ready to retire. We feel very privileged to have an artisan with a true knowledge of this craft design these rugs for us.

		Just as the name evokes, one can imagine the thoughts of walking on beaches while being caressed by warm summer breezes. The rich and exciting life of the whaling and sailing adventures along the New England coastline is remembered as it contributed a large role in shaping the distinctive nautical images of a formative young colony.
